The new Lumo is a no-no for style

October 22, 2021 Blog

I HAD the the thrill of seeing the much vaunted new “Lumo” low-fare but high-speed train on its way from King’s Cross to Edinburgh this week But the pleasure was somewhat muted by its livery. Very bland and ordinary. Why make trains look like aircraft? The name (from which the consultancy that spawned it probably derived a fortune) is bad enough. But the plain blue paintwork is unexciting even by airline standards. The railways have a great heritage which still appeals today (see Great Western’s TV ads). After all this is the route of the Flying Scotsman. Why not invoke some romance to set pulses racing for a  brand new train between the English and Scottish capitals?
