I came across an intriguing book category the other day on a bookshelf labelled ‘Rambling and Railways’. I suppose the two are linked by a healthy interest in the rural regions of Britain – which offer so much more than the bubble of city life. As it happens, this was in the excellent Foyles bookshop at St Pancras station – in the heart of London! Naturally I love independent bookshops – and the small Foyles chain is one of the best. Not only because they always have my books in stock (!), but because their buyers offer such a great contemporary range worth dipping into. Like Waterstones, they are a brilliant alternative to Amazon. If you can’t dip into a book – hopefully curated by a brilliant bookshop buyer – how can you ever find out about its worth?
