TRAGIC news this week that the Independent and Independent on Sunday are to stop printing. I spent 14 years working for both – first as executive editor of the Indy, and then as deputy editor of the Sindy. The closures are inevitable in a digital world where fewer readers want a printed product, and managements can no longer to be expected to take the financial hit of producing it. Even so I am sad today. Here’s a picture of me (centre) – young(ish) and full of hope – on the Independent news desk in the mid-1990s. And doesn’t it look old-fashioned now…
